Where did the Mummers tradition come from?
An old Christmas custom from England and Ireland, mummering in a version of its modern form can be traced back to Newfoundland into the 19th century.
Where is the Mummers parade route?
The Mummers Parade begins at City Hall and continues south to Washington Avenue. While the performers put on a show throughout the entire shindig, three special performance areas are designated along Broad Street, also known as the Avenue of the Arts.

How long has the Mummers Parade been around?
By 1901, the Mummers Day Parade has been officially adopted by the city of Philadelphia. Although the tradition has been going on since the conception of this country, the turn of the century from the 1800’s to the 1900’s can conceptually pinpoint the modern day start of this wonderful tradition.
How much does a Mummers costume cost?
The most extravagant costumes can cost up to $10,000, and costumes for 65-person clubs can cost close to $100,000
